Bedside Sleeper Cot
A bedside sleeper (also known by the name bassinet) is connected to the bed's side so that your baby can be close enough to feed them at night while remaining secure in their own space to sleep. Our mums appreciate that they are simple to reach and that they can also rotate or lower the sides to be closer.
Safety
A bedside sleeper cot allows babies to be within reach of their parents sleeping in their beds for nighttime feeding, providing comfort and monitoring, without increasing the risks associated with sharing beds (which could result in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The cots comply with NHS guidelines for co-sleeping, and are recommended by childcare experts, such as Dr McKenna, director of Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory.
They also provide immediate nursing support and help babies feel more secure by keeping them close, creating healthy attachments that help with developmental milestones. Parents should search for bassinets that are simple to clean and safe to use and are certified by a trusted organization like JPMA.
In 2023, ASTM updated its version of the bedside sleeping voluntary standard F2906 to respond to newer models that convert a bassinet into a bedside sleeper by lowering one side rail next to an adult bed, which allows certain areas of the lower side to be at an elevated level above the mattress, which presents an increased risk for entrapment. CPSC's direct final rule incorporates this 2023 revision of the mandatory standard set under section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) for sturdy toddler or infant products that have been in use for longer than 180 days and is expected to decrease the chance of injuries.
Be bedside cots for newborns that a bassinet or bedside sleeper, should never be used in conjunction with pillows or blankets. This could pose the risk of suffocation since many infants are unable to lift their heads high enough to pull them away from soft objects. Additionally, a reclined position could cause the head to slide forward blocking their airway. Always place your child on their back when using a bassinet, crib or play yard. Use a fitted sheet that is in compliance with the federal requirements.
Convenience
It is crucial to keep your baby close during the night. This helps create a bond between newborns and parents. bedside crib and cot are secured to the side of your mattress and allow you to reach your baby easily for feedings, diaper changes, and comforting in the middle of the night. We looked for models with mesh sides that were transparent enough to be able to see through so you could keep an eye on your child without needing to leave the bed.
It is important to ensure that the bassinet you purchase meets the American Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) requirements and is deemed safe for infants. You should look for a bassinet with a wide base and a strong attachment system. A breathable mattress is essential, too.
Choose a model with a manual rocking feature that's gentle on your baby and will help settle them to sleep. Some models also have tilt options that can be helpful for newborns with reflux or colic but should only be used with the guidance of your doctor or health visitor.
Some bassinets come with mattresses, while others require you to purchase one separately. Make sure you buy a mattress that is designed to fit the bedside bassinet. Second-hand mattresses could be too soft and could pose the risk of SIDS. It is also necessary to invest in a breathable fitted sheet and muslin blanket for your baby. For ease of cleaning, check that the fabric lining or foam mattress can be washed using a machine. A storage shelf or basket is a great option to store essentials such as nappies, clothing and muslins. There are many models that have wheels to enable it to be moved around the house.
Breastfeeding support
If you decide to breastfeed, a bedside sleeper cot can help you to maximize your feedings at night. Attached to your bed you can reach across to feed your baby whenever they wake up. The cot's sides can drop down to create a bassinet that is shallow to ensure safe sleeping side-by-side. Some models also tilt to accommodate reflux.
The curved sides make it easy to see and lift your baby up for a feeding. They won't roll off the side. Some cots with a bedside sleeper have an automatic rocking feature that can help calm your baby and help them to return to sleep quicker after feeding.
If you want to keep your baby clean, a cozy bedding and a removable material which can be washed by a machine can be very beneficial. Certain models come with gentle rocking and vibration features that can ease your baby into sleep. Breastfeeding mothers will also appreciate having plenty of storage.
It is convenient for breastfeeding mothers to share their bed with their babies. This allows them to form a close bond during their sleep. Research has proven that babies who are breastfed who share a sleeping space with their mothers have better outcomes than those who are bottle-fed. But, it is crucial that you know the safety risks and practices involved in sharing a bed with a newborn and pick a suitable mattress for your baby.
Some sleeping bags in the bed have soft surfaces on the edges that could keep your baby in the bag. You also need to be aware not to let your bed-side sleeper slide backwards, forming an opening that your child could crawl into or roll into.

If you are concerned about the safety of a baby who sleeps at the bedside take a look at attending an LLL meeting or speaking with a Sleep Leader to find out more about the sleep habits of breastfeeding mothers and their babies. They can provide guidance on how to create a safe sleep environment for your baby and help to understand the dangers of SIDS. They can also help you understand how to get the'sweet sleep' that nursing mothers enjoy that includes many protective factors similar to breastfeeding.
